Our Dance Teacher!

Jamelene Devera

Jamelene Devera is currently a student at UC San Diego studying Cognitive Science. In her free time, she enjoys taking naps, singing karaoke, tending to her Spotify playlist for the week, and seeing new things! She is currently a troupe member of Culture Shock San Diego. In her childhood, she remembers attempting to mimic the choreography of popular music videos and, of course, entertaining relatives with her dancing at the request of her mother for family gatherings. Her first exposure to dance training was at the age of four through ballet classes at a small studio in El Cajon. Then, around the age of 10, she began practicing hula and Tahitian dance under Pride of Polynesia. By the time she was in middle school, her aunts (both former collegiate dancers on teams 909 and Kababayan) were eager to introduce her to the world of hip hop. Shortly after, Jamelene joined Future Shock San Diego from 2016 to 2018. During her junior year at Steele Canyon High School, she founded and led a hip hop club with Paulina and Fayline Separa called Club Groove with the goal of educating students about hip hop history, culture, and foundations. She also was on One Ten Dance Team from 2018 to 2020. Her love for dance has only grown over time as it serves as an outlet for self-expression - a form of therapy. Her current goals are to continue being a student of dance while sharing her passion for the art with others.
